This particular place was called Singapore (city of the lion), in the new age of steamships it soon became a major stopping point for traffic traveling to or from China. During the next few decades, the British advance into Southeast Asia continued. close to fall was the kingdom of Burma in order to protect its possessions to India. It also sought a land route through Burma into southern China. Because of the difficult terrain along the enclosure between Burma and China, this effort was destined to fail. British activities in Burma led to the collapse of the Burmese monarchy. Britain soon chip ined control over the entire country.
